March 2005 Welcome to The CTMA Connector, a monthly newsletter designed to provide news and ideas about the Commercial Technologies for Maintenance Activities (CTMA) program. The CTMA program is a joint Department of Defense/National Center for Manufacturing Sciences (DoD/NCMS) effort promoting collaborative technology development between industry and the DoD maintenance and repair facilities. This newsletter highlights ongoing projects, serves as a forum for promoting new project ideas, and provides other news of interest to the program. Our goal is to stimulate your participation and solicit your input. Feel free to submit items for the newsletter as well as any suggestions to make it more useful. More information about the program can be found at http://ctma.ncms.org/. To subscribe or unsubscribe to the CTMA Connector, send a message to listserv@listserv.ncms.org with "subscribe CTMANewsletter" or "unsubscribe CTMANewsletter" in the subject line. Last Notice to Register (click here) 2005 CTMA Symposium "Where Ideas Become Reality"
April 18 - 21 at the Tacoma Sheraton, Tacoma, Washington.
Keynote speakers include: Congressman Norm Dicks, Washington 6th District and a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee,
Vice Admiral Phillip Balisle, Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command, and David Pauling, Assistant Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Maintenance Policy, Programs, Resources, and Material Readiness
Join us for networking, technical project reviews in four concurrent tracks, and putting forth your project ideas for possible inclusion in the CTMA program.
Information and Registration at http://ctma.ncms.org Project News The CTMA Rapid Manufacturing and Repair Project was included in an article on Rapid Prototyping in March 2005 issue of Desktop Engineering magazine. The article can be found on-line at http://www.deskeng.com/Articles/Resource-Guide/Time-for-RP-Standards-20050301345.html Recently Completed Project: Product Lifecycle Management for Six Sigma Quality This project addressed major opportunities for improving the way in which product design data is linked to the quality plan and manufacturing information throughout the supply chain and product lifecycle from initial design to Depot maintenance. The pilot demonstration used a new production part similar to one that currently receives Depot maintenance at OC-ALC. The work done during this project was to understand the Depot requirements, and sets the stage for broader deployment of the PLM tools that were successfully demonstrated. It is expected that further deployment will yield very significant benefits measured in terms of improved quality, reduced cost, and reduced time required to launch new products or change existing designs. The following business process areas were the focus of the project:

Recently Approved Project: Kinetic Spray Metal Deposition Technologies for Corrosion Protection Corrosion prevention and mitigation remains a top priority for both the Department of Defense as well as private industry. It is estimated that the DoD spends up to $20 billion per year fighting corrosion, and nationally, corrosion costs over $250 billion annually. A variety of technologies are used in an effort to thwart corrosion. The use of thermal spray coatings is widely used by the DoD. The problem with conventional thermal spray techniques is the control of the coating thickness and quality. In addition, portability is limited, so the use of these techniques is mainly restricted to depot-level activities. This project involves the development of a related technology, kinetic spray deposition. Kinetic spray does not rely upon molten droplets that impact the surface and then solidify. Instead, the particles are accelerated, impact the surface, deform plastically, and cold weld to the surface. This results in a better surface coating with less oxidation and higher density. Additionally, the technology is amenable to portability, meaning the potential to use this technology in intermediate and field operations.
