Retrograde Part Identification Using 2nd Generation Permanent Marking Techniques

The DoD is automating its parts tracking systems to achieve total asset visibility, improvements in material reliability determinations. Data Matrix is the dominant barcode symbology used to place a permanent machine-readable code directly into material surfaces. The project shall determine a marking method that is acceptable for a specific material type, so that symbology will survive after harsh environments. The project will:

  • Develop portable markers that can be used to permanently identify aircraft, tracked vehicle and weapon system components
  • Develop products and processes for restoration of identification markings in the field
  • Develop barcode readers for locating, imaging, and decoding markings that are covered over with protective coatings and/or paints.
