Department of Energy
(View DOE Project List)
The Department of Energy (DoE) was formed in 1977, to provide the
framework for a comprehensive and balanced national energy plan by
coordinating and administering the energy functions of the federal
government. The DoE undertook responsibility for long-term, high-risk
research and development of energy technology, federal power marketing,
energy conservation, the nuclear weapons program, energy regulatory
programs, and a central energy data collection and analysis program.
The DOE's overarching mission is to advance the national, economic, and
energy security of the United States; to promote the scientific and
technological innovation in in support of that mission; and to ensure
the environmental cleanup of the national nuclear weapons complex.
Lean Product Development Initiative (http://lpdi.ncms.org)
The Lean Product Development Initiative (LPDI) is a set of products
and services built around the findings of the successful NCMS
collaborative project, Product Development Process-Methodology and
Performance Measures. These findings, based largely on the Toyota
paradigms, focus on development from a knowledge based perspective
rather than the traditional control based perspective most common in
companies today. As a result of this project, NCMS has a goal of
deploying the results to its members and to North American
manufacturing companies in general. Accordingly, LPDI is offering
workshops, training, books, consulting, change management, etc for
companies wishing to make a great leap forward in their product and
process development productivity and cycle times.

value to NCMS members. When you become an NCMS Community Services
member, your employees will have web access to manufacturing-related
news from leading sources, e-mail push features that provide updates on
manufacturing-related topics, and a directory of manufacturing resources
available on the Internet. Your employees will also receive the latest
news on NCMS activities, a list of NCMS project web pages, and they can
customize a separate page with personal links, news, weather, and stock
information.
Member Services is the base membership for NCMS. However, if you join
one of our other programs, you will also receive Community Member

Risk Forum (http://risk.ncms.org)
On February 19, 2003, a workshop was held at the Headquarters of the
National Center for Manufacturing Sciences in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to
form a new cross-industry initiative, the NCMS Enterprise and Supply
Chain Risk Management and Continuity Forum. Representatives from a
variety of functional disciplines within the industries, as well as the
government sector, leading researchers and technology innovators, came
together to learn from each other and consider participation in the
Forum.
Formal participation in the Forum by any one function, department or
component of a company is deemed by NCMS to entitle the entire company
or corporation to participate in the Forum.

NCMS has become a recognized leader in helping manufacturers deal
with environmental issues and responsibilities. In partnership with the
U. S. Environmental Protection Agency and leading trade and professional
organizations, NCMS is responsible for the creation and maintenance of
web-based Compliance Assistance Centers for a number of key industry
sectors. The Environmental Roadmapping Initiative is exploring
innovative ways to achieve environmental targets. NCMS created and hosts
the widely used SOLV-DB® solvent database, a comprehensive source of
chemical, regulatory, health and safety information on hundreds of
industry solvents. And numerous collaborative projects have enlisted the
resources of NCMS members in meeting common environmental challenges. A
variety of reports on topics ranging from metalworking fluids and
hexavalent chromium elimination to environmental self-assessment are
available.
